This buckle was found in the donor's garden. It may have been used for the girth of a carthorse, probably to tighten the girth and hold the pad or cart saddle in position. It likely originates from no later than the 18th century, and is possibly older.

Letter, P. Chantler to Higgs, 6th Sept, 1952 - Mr Chantler states that there has been a house in the location from 'mediaeval times', so the buckle may even be much older than 18th century.
