Beschreibung
This waistcoat was given to Lavinia Smith by William Francis, probably of East Hendred, whose grandfather, William Skeggs, of Rotherhithe in London, acquired it in 1771. It is of the type worn under a long frock coat in the late-eighteenth and early-nineteenth centuries. The fronts and skirt at the back are made of red and white striped cotton, the back is twilled cotton and it is lined with colourless cotton. It has fourteen button holes and two pockets with flaps.

MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'This waistcoat belonged to Mr. William Skeggs of Rotherhithe (London?), grandfather of Mr. W. J. Francis (?of East Hendred, Berks?). Mr. Skeggs obtained it in the year 1771. // It is the type worn under a long frock coat in the late 18th and early 19th centuries and possibly later. It is not of very good quality, nor is it particularly smart. The fronts and skirt at the back are made of red and white striped cotton, and the part of the back, which would be unseen is of twilled cotton. The inside is lined with colourless cotton. It is hand sewn with fourteen button holes and places for the buttons on the other side. It has two pockets with flaps, and slits at the sides and in the centre of the back in the skirt. // It measures 29 inches from shoulder to hem, and about 29-30 inches round the waist.', No Lavinia Smith No. recorded.
