This pit saw was used for cutting large tree trunks. One man stood on top of the trunk and the other in a pit underneath. It is not known where it was made, but it was used by Mr William Brain and his sons at his wheelwrights shop in Wootton, Oxfordshire. It was probably made in the late nineteenth century, and used up to 1920.
