Beskrivelse
This is the share from a mole plough, used in the 1890s and probably much earlier, at Baythorne Hall Farm, near Baythorne End, Essex. Mole ploughs are used to create deep subsoil drainage channels. This mole plough was drawn by a steel cable from a winch operated by 3 horses. There was roughly 200 yards of cable, so that on a long field, the winch had to be moved more than once - another horse was used to pull the cable and plough down the field. The drains were 28 inches deep, a furrow being ploughed first to help reach this depth.
