A 'WOLF-Terrex Spade' – a semi-mechanical spade made by Wolf Tools. The spade is designed to enable the user to dig without having to lift either the soil or the spade. It is believed to have been purchased in Reading some time in the late 1970s.

MERL ‘Handwritten accession form’ (Institute of Agricultural History) – ‘Standard museum name: SEMI-MECHANICAL SPADE // Accession number: 95/23 // … // Description: Large spade with square blade attached to metal handle which is flat in cross section at the bottom and cylindrical further up. The curved handle bar has two handles with black plastic grips. A support is fixed to the back of the spade which acts as a lever while digging. A curved spring operates a foot bar which rests on the support when not in use.
