A blue glass bottle, originally containing cantharidin extract, a veterinary ointment used in the treatment of horses. The decorative paper label on the neck reads 'Oleum Cantharid. Fort. Poison // (Veterinary) // Prepared only by John Richardson & Co. // Leicester Ltd. // Established 1795 Incorporated 1891'. The bottle is part of the collection of John Lester Gilbert, a botanist and local historian from Wansford in Cambridgeshire.

1 bottle: blue glass; good conditionAdditional inscription on label reads; 'This being a pure Cantharidin Extract in olive oil, it is preferred by many practitioners to the various blistering ointments, as its action is prolonged and less irritation attends its use. For thoroughbreds and other horses with fine skins it is specially indicated'...'This preparation is labelled POISON under the requirements of the Pharmacy Act.'
