It is a copy of a Skye basket, known locally as a ‘shoe basket’. The shape of the basket enables them to be stacked, with a dent in the base for the handle of the one beneath.

MERL 85/2, MERL 68/380

Visiting researcher note, Tim Johnson (basketmaker), 20 June 2014 – This basket was probably made by someone who also made bee-skeps, as it uses the same technique. They have saved time by using a wooden board for a base, as the base takes the longest time in coiled work. The straw has been bound with bramble rather than bark. The joins in the bramble are neat and tidy and all on the inside of the basket. The handle is made of a piece of split wood with straw bound on the top. It feeds down the sides through the coils and is nailed at the top of the basket to hold it in place., Mr S. H. Rose, the donor, trained as a wheelwright in Bramley, Hampshire. He is connected to the Wigleys of Wigley and Sons, builders in Silchester, Hampshire, through his wife's family (his wife's aunt married a Wigley). His wife's grandparents lived in Pamber Green, Hampshire., MERL 'Handwritten accession' form (Institute of Agricultural History) – 'Standard museum name: BASKET, Egg gathering // Accession number: 85/2 // … // Description: A small basket made of coiled straw and bound with strips of bark or bramble.
