A paring gouge is normally used without a mallet for light paring work. This gouge has an extremely large blade which is in-cannelled (the grinding bevel is on the inside) and seems to be made of two metals. It was used at R. Middleton & Sons' wheelwrights workshop in Eddington, Hungerford, and was used for boxing wheel hubs.

MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'This is a paring gouge that was used in the Middletons’ wheelwrights’ shop at Hungerford (Berks). The blade is welded onto the handle and the tip is straight. There are five letters on the inner side of the blade which appear to be ATFO+. There seem to be two types of metal in the blade, which is extremely large. // The handle is also large but neatly turned and finished.
