This porcelain soup plate was made by the Old Hall Earthenware Co. Ltd. of Hanley, Staffordshire, circa 1861-86. It has a shallow bowl and wide rim with a scallop edge, and features a design of a swan in blue on a white background. The base is stamped 'SWAN // O.H.E.Co (L)' and incised 'enamel' porcelain. The plate is one of a set of six or eight which the donor believes were given to his grandfather as a wedding present circa 1880.

MERL 'Handwritten catalogue' form – ‘One of set of 6 or 8; given to donor by his uncle Arnold Hayden of High Roding, Essex. Donor believes that they were given to Arnold Hayden’s father, George, by “one of the local gentry” as a wedding present. George married c.1880. // 27 cm (diameter at rim); enamel porcelain // shallow bowl-shape with wide, flanged rim // scallop-edged // blue swan design on interior and rim; white background // stamped on bottom ‘SWAN // O.H.E.Co (L)’ // also faint incised stamp reading ‘enamel porcelain’ // condition: cracked, chipped, but complete.’
