Arkivhistorik
MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'This searing iron belonged to the Goodey family who were horse dealers in Reading for many years. It was used to sear the stumps of horses’ tails to stop the bleeding after they had been docked. The iron was heated and placed against the stump so that it rested on the muscular parts round the bone, and was brought into contact with the bleeding vessels. The hole in the centre of the iron prevented it from burning the bone. // The iron measures 16.75 inches in length and has a short wooden handle.'
