This wine jar, for storing wine, is believed to date from the mid-nineteenth century. It is an earthenware jug with a dark brown glaze on the inside and the upper half of the outside - the lower half is unglazed. There is a taphole near the base. The jar was used at Pickmere Hall Farm in Pickmere, Cheshire, and may have belonged to the donor's mother.

MERL miscellaneous note, Greta Bertram, 5 November 2012 – Mrs Stringer donated to jars to MERL – one belonged to her mother and the other was found in the cellar of Smithy Farm. The MERL ‘Associated information’ form and Adlib appear to be muddled as to which is which. 59/344: the MERL ‘Associated information’ form states that this was used by the owner’s mother, whereas Adlib states that this was found at Smithy Farm (it matches the drawing given in a letter from Mrs Stringer of the jar found at Smithy Farm). 59/345: the MERL ‘Associated information’ form states that it was used at Pickmere Hall Farm, near Knutsford, Cheshire, as does Adlib, but there is no indication as to whether this is where the donor’s mother lived.
