This is a table used in the butter making process. It has a moving roller mechanism which applies pressure and squeezes out the buttermilk as it is moved along the surface. It is inscribed 'Bradford's Patent Arch Alpine [?]' on the front face. It was used in Surrey.

1 working table: wood [inc. sycamore]; iron; leadA wooden table with four legs and four ties at the base. There are two smaller ties higher up on each side. There are also two supports underneath for a bucket or other item of equipment. The table is firmly fixed to the legs and is an arched shape. It has a wooden rim 6cm. deep at the sides, 6cm. deep at one end and 13cm. deep at the highest end. There is a lead drainage pipe and outlet at either end. There is a wooden roller 24cm. long which has 8 ridges (spiral). The roller has iron fixings and an iron handle with a wooden end. There is a wooden bar above the roller to enable it to be moved to different positions on the table. There are small wooden wheels which act as runners. Buttermilk is squeezed out by the pressure of the roller as it is moved along.

This firm, with a factory at Salford, was a major manufacturer from the last quarter of the nineteenth century of dairy and laundry machinery. This butter worker has a helical roller which moves up and down the arched trough when the handle is turned. Sizes ranged from the AA, at £5 10s which could work 7 lbs of butter at a time, up to the DD at £11 capable of dealing with 20lbs of butter.<BR> 56/360</SPAN></SPAN></P></DIV>
