This paring chisel has an octagonal handle and the blade is fitted with a tang. The blade is stamped with a small figure of a man, the letters 'John B' and the name of the makers, 'Hearnshaw Bros., Sheffield'. It was used at R. Middleton & Sons' wheelwrights shop in Eddington, Hungerford, for hand-paring without a chisel.

MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'This paring chisel was used at the Middleton’s wheelwrights shop at Eddington. // The handle is octagonal. It is 6 inches long and narrows from 1.45 inches to 1.25 inches at the joint with the shaft. The shaft and blade together are 7.3 inches long. The blade itself is 6.1 inches long and 1.5 inches wide. It is sharply bevelled to a straight edge. The blade is fitted into the handle with a tang. // A small figure of a man with the letters John B beneath it are stamped on the blade. The name of the makers, Hearnshaw Bros., Sheffield, is stamped on the back of the blade parallel to its length. See also 51/354.'
