This mortising chisel, used for cutting mortices to create joints in wood, has a sharply bevelled blade marked 'Isaac Greaves Cast Steel' and an octagonal handle. The flattened end of the handle indicates that it was used with a mallet. It was used at R. Middleton & Sons' wheelwrights workshop in Eddington, Hungerford.

MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'This mortising chisel was used at the Middleton’s wheelwrights shop at Eddington. // The octagonal handle is fitted into the tubular shaft of the blade. The handle is 4 inches long. The shaft is 3.5 inches long. The blade is 3.25 inches long, .45 inches wide and .5 inches deep. The blade is bevelled sharply to a straight edge. The maker’s name, Isaac Greaves and the words Cast Steel are stamped on the back of the blade. The end of the handle is slightly flattened by a mallet. // See also 51/363.'
