This is a money collecting box used by the National Dairymen's Benevolent Institution (NDBI) to collect funds. It is made of pale-coloured wood, with a brass lock and copper-covered slot in the lid for putting money into. Text in cream-coloured paint on the lid reads 'National Dairymen's Benevolent Institution', and the base is covered with green baize. The NDBI provided financial assistance to retired dairymen.

MERL 'Handwritten accession' form (Museum of English Rural Life) – 'Description: One of two collecting boxes used to acquire funds for the NDBI. Pale wood box, varnished. Brass keyhole surround on front face and brass lock mechanism (locked as open and key missing). Money slot in lid with copper surround. Decorative brass hinges to rear of lid. Curved upper surface to lid. Base covered with green baize. Text on lid in cream-coloured paint reads ‘National Dairymen’s Benevolent Institution’. // Dimensions: Max width 225mm // Max height 128mm // Max depth 123mm // Associated information: This object is part of a small collection of artefacts, books, archival materials, and photographs received from the National Dairymen’s Benevolent Institution (NDBI) on the occasion of their closure. The NDBI provided financial assistance to individuals who worked in the diary trade (for a continuous period of seven years or more) and who had been required to retire due to age or ill health.
