Beskrivelse
This is a smoke jack, a type of jack which uses smoke to turn spits in front of a fire. It was made by Gill and Co., of Oxford, probably in the early 19th century, and was in use until the 1920s in the kitchens of Corpus Christi College, Oxford, from where it was initially donated to the Museum of the History of Science in Oxford. It was later transferred to MERL, and has since also been displayed at the County Museum at Woodstock. Apart from 6 spits (61/196/1-6), this smoke jack is on permanent loan to the Museum of Oxford.
