Purchased as part of the Filming Rural Crafts project. // Mary was filmed dyeing, spinning and weaving at her home in May 2007. Weft Sequence // (No. of ends and natural dye or sheep breed used in half of the length - this then repeats in the second half) // ... Exhaust // A dye bath using the remaining dye after a batch of fibre has been dyed. Results in a paler colour than the first use of the dye bath. // 1st Dip/2nd Dip // More and more indigo dye is built up on fibres by successive dipping of the yarn into the dyebath. 2nd dip therefore gives a deeper colour than the first. // Mordant // Alum was used as a mordant. Mordants are things which help the dye to work, and can also affect the colour of the resulting fibre. // Overdyed // A technique of dying firts with one colour and then a second. Weld (yellow) overdyed with Indigo (blue) gives a green. // Warp // Warp threads run the length of the cloth // Weft // The weft threads run across the cloth from side to side.'
