Moulding planes are used to create mouldings, or profiles, in wood. This type of moulding plane is called an 'ogee' and has a fluted blade which produces an almost s-shaped curve. The front end of the stock, the wooden part of the plane, is stamped with the name 'R. Gooding'. It was used at R. Middleton & Sons' wheelwrights shop in Eddington, Hungerford.

MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'This tool was used at the Middletons' wheelwrights' shop at Hungerford (Berks). // This is a large sized moulding plane called an 'Ogee'. It is 9.5 inches long and 3.1 inches high, by 2.7 inches wide at the sole. The fluted blade is 1.7 inches wide at the tip and is of this shape: [drawing]. A narrow strip of wood, 0.3 inches in width has been screwed on to the sole, by 4 screws, thus altering the shape of the sole slightly. The front end of the stock is stamped with the name 'R.
