This is a ball of sisal string enclosed in brown paper. Also it has the inscription: 'RED STAR NO. 0 BALER AND BINDER TWINE' with the instructions for use. This twine came from the farm of the donor's brother-in-law.

<DIV STYLE="text-align:Justify;font-family:Georgia;font-style:normal;font-weight:normal;font-size:16;color:#000000;"><P><SPAN><SPAN>6. <B>Roll of binder twine</B><P>The earliest mechanised binders used quite stiff wire because the tying of the sheaf could then be made with a simple twist rather than a more complicated knot. There were, however, disadvantages: it was more difficult to cut a wire tie, and there was always the risk of damage through pieces of wire slipping through to the mechanism of a threshing machine or to livestock chewing on threshed straw.<P>An automatic knotting mechanism for twine was developed in America during the 1860s. Binders using the device did not immediately become popular because twine itself was relatively scarce and costly. That situation changed during the 1880s as volume production in Mexico of twine made from sisal hemp became available. Thereafter, twine tying binders quickly took over from the wire variety.<P>90/22</SPAN></SPAN></P></DIV>
