This is a beech-framed bow saw made by William Marples & Sons, a well-known tool manufacturer in Sheffield, and is stamped with their name and trademark. It was used by the donor’s father, who owned a draper’s shop in Reading, and was probably made in the early twentieth century.

MERL 'Handwritten accession' form (Museum of English Rural Life): “Description: Beech framed bow saw with string and toggle stick for tightening the blade. The manufacturer’s name and trade sign is stamped on one of the cheeks: ‘Hibernia, Wm Marples & Son, Sheffield’ below a shamrock. / / Associated information: Belonged to donor’s father who owned a draper’s shoe, ‘Kedges’ in Castle St., Reading. This saw is believed to about 70-80 years old. Wm Marples and Son, of Hibernia works, Sheffield, were among the leading tool establishments of the world by 1870. The firm continued until 1962 when jointly purchased by Wm Ridgway Ltd and C&J Hampton of Sheffield. (ref 1). A 1940 Marples catalogue illustrates a bow saw with an identical wood frame to 81/2 but with a wire stretcher (ref 2). / / References: 1.
