This is a wrought iron jack bracket for hanging dangle spits or bottle jacks, on which meat would be roasted, over the fire. It would be secured to the front of the fireplace or to the mantle by the screw on the top of the bracket. It was given to Lavinia Smith by William Woodley of East Hendred forge.

MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'This bracket was found in an old forge in East Hendred (Berks) and was given to Miss Smith by Mr. William Woodley. It was used to suspend a bottle jack or dangle spit over the fire. It was secured to the front of the fireplace or to the mantle by the screw on the top of the bracket. The spit or jack was hung from the hook which runs on the bottom bar. // The bracket is made of wrought iron and measures 9.75 inches in length. // See also 51/517L.', Lavinia Smith Catalogue (D60/28) - 'A list of the contents of the East Hendred museum. July 5 1940 // 480. A letter W, and 2 little racks from the old forge where William Woodley worked. The Woodleys are a very old E. Hendred family and still exist.'
