MERL ‘Handwritten accession’ form (Institute of Agricultural History) -‘BEAM SCALES // Crafts- Metal//65/231 // Gift(?) Edwards + Godding Ltd, Market Place, Newbury // Description// According to the sketch in the attached recording form this scales should consist of a stand from which is suspended the beam. From the beam hangs a ‘craddle’ and a platform for weights. All parts made of iron. Inscription: BIRMINGHAM // Dimensions// Stand: 10ft Length of cradle: 3ft6”, Beam: 6ft, Length of weight platform: 5 ft. // Associated Information // Date: c.1910. Edwards + Godding were iron mangers. The scales were used for weighing bar iron on a counter weight principle. Thought to be a SALTER or AVERY scales. The beam, cradle + weight platform are in the camp. Not certain where the stand is at present. A large hook with the scales maybe for suspending the beam from the stand.’
