MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'This gouge was used in the Middletons’ wheelwrights’ shop at Hungerford (Berks). // It is a large paring [crossed out and replaced with wheelwrights] gouge, the end of the blade is straight. The metal of the blade is welded over the handle. The name SHAW, preceded by another letter which might be a K or an E, is imprinted on the inner side of the blade. The handle is very rough at the end and someone has tried to chip it off easily, but the attempt was not successful. // The blade is 1.75 inches across and 8.5 inches long, while the handle measures 4 inches. // Incannelled // See also 51/111M.'
