This is a formal animal portrait of the shorthorn bull 'Count Lavender', set in a landscape of fields with a farmhouse in the background. It was painted and signed by James Albert Clark, of Islington, 1892. Count Lavender was bred by William Duthie of Tarves and purchased by J. Deane Willis of Bapton Manor, Codford Saint Mary. He was the winner of 36 first and champion prizes. It is one of a collection of paintings and prints thought to date from the last quarter of the 18th century to c.1860.

Carter's No. 95', MERL miscellaneous note [The Royal Smithfield Club] – ‘A letter was received from the Museum in which it was stated that they had been given an opportunity to purchase a collection of paintings and prints of Farm Livestock executed during the period from the last quarter of the 18th century to about 1860. These include animals which had won prizes at the Smithfield Shows of 1834 and 1851… At the request of the Council, Mr. W. J. Cumber and Mr. P. M. Colebrook inspected the paintings and prints, and they were unanimous in recommending that the Club should purchase the prints and present them to the Museum… The Museum have agreed that the collection shall be recorded as The Royal Smithfield Club Collection.’, MERL Miscellaneous note – ‘Count Lavender’ shorthorn bull by James Clark // James Clark (1812-1884) aka James Lawrence Clark aka James Clark Senior was an animal painter. He lived at 21 Walbrook Street, St Leonard, Shoreditch from 1858-1878 and 67 Riversdale Road, Islington from 1879. On paintings under his signature he sometimes added his address. He opened a studio with his teenage son, James Albert Clark (1863-1955) and his work with his son was signed James Clark and Son. // The signature on the painting is “James Clark ’92”. Therefore, must have been produced by James Albert Clark in 1892.
