This is a box wheel butter churn. It was used in Muddiford, Devon, for making butter from cream by churning with the paddle. The lid and the wheel and steel bar are detachable, to assist cleaning.

1 box churn: wood [sycamore] and metalA wooden box churn. The two ends slope in at the lower edge for about 7.5 cm and are strengthened by a wooden bar on each end. The lid fits neatly into the top and has a substantial wooden handle. The paddle has four blades each with three slats and fits neatly into the well of the churn. The paddle is attached to the churn and handle by wooden fittings. The arm of the handle is metal with a shaped wooden end for grasping.

MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'Nothing is known of the origin of this box wheel butter churn. It consists of a strongly made rectangular box which is 14 1/4 inches long, 11 1/2 inches wide and 12 1/2 inches high. The wheel inside, which measures 10 1/2 inches by 8 inches has four arms, each arm with three slats. A steel bar which serves as a handle passes through a hole in the side of the box and through the centre of the churning wheel. This bar has a wooden handle used for turning the wheel when churning. The lid which measures 14 3/4 inches by 12 inches has a wooden bar across the top for lifting. The lid and the wheel and steel bar are detachable to assist cleaning.'
