The brace, with bit, is a tool used by coopers to cut dowel holes in the cask heads. This brace consists of a wooden hand grip fixed to a large button at one end and a spoon bit at the other. It was used in the cooper's shop at H. & G. Simonds Ltd., known as the Bridge Street Brewery, in Reading.

MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'The main use of the brace and the bit in coopering is for cutting the dowel holes in the various sections of the head. These are then caulked with rush, shaped and fitted. // This brace is an all wooden brace with a breast knob 5 inches in diameter. The whole tool is 15 inches long, and the spoon bit no more than 0.25 inches wide.', MERL 'Catalogue index' card – [Coopering – General Card, 55/37–55/56 and 55/66–55/68] – 'This set of Cooper's tools came to the Museum from the Cooper's Department, Messrs H & G Simonds The Brewery, Reading. Although the majority of the tools are modern, indeed some of them were never used, the tools are nevertheless the same as have been used for centuries by both urban and rural coopers.'
