This is a wooden driving stick from East Hendred, Oxfordshire (formerly in Berkshire). It was used for driving animals by prodding their backs with the pointed tip, rather than by beating the animal with it.

MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'This wooden stick from East Hendred, Berks, was used for driving animals. It consists of a wooden stick, oval in profile, which end is sharply tapering point. A piece of leather thronging is threaded through a pair of holes, 4 inches apart, near the end of the stick, and acts as a grip for the hand of the operator. The total length is 27.5 inches. The usual method of use was to prod the animals’ backs with the pointed tip rather than to beat the animal.', No Lavinia Smith No. recorded.
