A halter, also sometimes called a 'headstall', is a type of headgear used to lead or tie up animals such as horses. This halter consists of a series of straps with an attached rope. It was used with a ploughing horse on Houghton Park Farm in Ampthill, Bedfordshire. It was designed to be used with a separate halter weight (see object 51/730), which was used for keeping the loose end of a horse’s halter lead taut when tied in the stable. The end of the lead is passed through a ring in the manger and the weight is tied to the bottom.
