The wagon was given to the Museum in 1953 by General Reeve's great grandson, Lt Colonel W.Reeve, who still farmed the Leadenham estate. It was one of a number of wagons that were added to the collection during the 1950s. With tractors rapidly replacing horses on the farm at the time, the farm wagon in its original form was now redundant and many were destroyed or simply left to rot. As they were symbolic of the horse era and of local traditions of craftsmanship, the Museum took a particular interest in them and one member of staff, J.G.Jenkins produced an extensive study, The English Farm Wagon, which was first published in 1961.
53/567
