الوصف
This is a covered shopper basket made of buff willow, with a red, green, blue and white pattern all around the outside and on the top of the lid. The pattern may have been stencilled onto the basket and, although it is now faded, may have been a pattern of roses of the 'roses and castles' design that was a popular decoration on canal boats. The basket may have been used in England to carry shopping home from the market. It was collected by Maurice Bichard, the author of 'Baskets in Europe' (published in 2008 by Fyfield Wick Editions), in 1987, when he purchased it from the Rope Walk Antiques shop in Rye, Sussex.
