This is a wrought iron candleholder of the type commonly used in cellars as the spike could be thrust into a crevice in the wall or beneath the hoops of a barrel, leaving the hands free. It dates from the eighteenth century and comes from Sussex.

MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'Candlesticks of this type were frequently used in cellars. The end of the handle is spike shaped so that it could be thrust into a crevice in the wall or beneath the hoops of a barrel leaving the hands free to draw liquor. // It is made of wrought iron and the tray is attached to the handle by two copper rivets. The candlestick comes from Sussex and measures 12.25 inches long.', Victoria & Albert Museum No. M385, 1917.
