الوصف
This tray was found in old butcher's shop when it was taken over by a new owner. At this time (c. 1936), no other butchers in the area had ever used or owned a similar tray. Its first collector, Mr Massingham, believed it to be around 100 years old, and also thought it may be the only tray of its kind left in the North Cotswolds.

تاريخ أرشيفي
Letter, Harold G. Greening to Mr Massingham, 25th August 1938 [from the collections of Winchcombe Folk and Police Museum, transcribed by Bridget Yates, February 2009. No copy is available in accession file] - 'The Butchers Tray- This my father has secured for you from Mr Wm Major the Younger a local butcher whose father has recently retired and who some years ago took over in addition to his own butchers business which had been owned by the family named Reeks and this tray belonged to the Reeks business and it would be around 100 years old. It was secured just in time to save it from the fire for it had been thrown out to be chopped up for firewood a few days ago following the splitting up of the business on the recent retirement of Mr Wm Major senr [senior]. This tray has not been used for many years and is a real treasure for these does not appear to be another in the locality, several of the well established butchers have never had or used one.', Citation in publication [H. J. Massingham, 'Country Relics' (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1939)] - 'Such buckets, used for mash and barley meal to feed the pigs and poultry rather than for milk, have gone with the coopers. But the country of the mind retains them still, as it does my yokes and my butcher's tray made out of a single piece of wood.' J. Massingham Collection // NUMBER: 51/18M // DESCRIPTION: This tray came from a butcher's shop in Winchcombe, Glos. [Gloucestershire] It was the property of a local butcher who found it in an old shop which he took over. At this time (c.a.1936) none of the other butchers in Winchcombe had either possessed or used one. Mr Massingham dated it, when he obtained it, at about a hundred years old and believed it, at that time, to be the only one of its type in the North Cotswold. // Though badly cracked down the middle it is made from one piece of beechwood. It has two iron bracket patches on the bottom and a copper hand round each end. // The overall length is 29 3/4" and it is 9 3/4" wide at the broadest part. There are two handles 4" long at each end and the tray itself is about 2 1/2" deep in the middle., MERL list / description [Massingham Collection, October 1989] – 'ACC.
