Manufactured 1958 (serial number) // References: Singer Industrial Products catalogue 1973-74 p.60. Barnett catalogue No. 83', Citation in publication [E.J. Barnett, ‘Sewing machines: a catalogue of the Barnett collection’ ([Reading]: University of Reading, 1982] – ’83 // Singer 29K71 Boot Repairing machine // This is a modern version of the Bradbury Boot Repairing machine (no. 38 [81/127]).’ (pp.61), Barnett Collection Review (2011) - 'Machines like this were in production from circa 1880 right up until circa 1970. This example would have been used for stitching leather. It might have been a cobbler's machine or was perhaps used for sewing tack and harnesses. There is a strong possibility of an original rural provenance. This is a highly recognisable machine and, although it is not very rare, it is nevertheless extremely important. Examples of this machine are still often used by contemporary craft makers.', MERL Miscellaneous note - According to the International Sewing Machine Collectors' Society website Singer's Clydebank factory issued EN serial numbers from 1958 to 1959 [http://ismacs.net accessed 2017-12-01]., MERL Miscellaneous note - The sewing machine was arguably the first internationally mass marketed consumer good, and the Singer Manufacturing Company was predominantly responsible for this. Founded by travelling showman Isaac Singer in 1851, the American company flourished not because of its technical expertise but due to its innovative advertising and purchasing options. Notably, it invented hire purchase and part exchange. Its factory in Clydebank, Scotland, was one of the largest in the world, and produced machines not only for the UK but also globally. By 1912, 90% of sewing machines purchased outside the USA were Singer machines. Singer was the seventh largest company in the world at this time. [Added by Tim Jerrome for the Barnett project, 2022], MERL Miscellaneous note - From TR BNT P2/B261: Features of this machine include a winged lever above the feeding foot which allow the work to be stitched in any direction without being turned. It could be operated at a speed of 500 stitches per minute. The 29k71 specifically has the shortest lower arm of all 29k machines at 12.5 inches, and so was ideal for stitching into small spaces like the toes and shoes of slippers.
