الوصف المادي
1 mole trap: wood; good condition.....to the top of a hazel switch. The switch is bent down to the ground by means of a short cord which is held in the hole in the board by a small wooden peg which projects downward from the board into the tunnel between the two nooses. This peg is known as a mumble pin. The board is then firmly pegged down to the ground with a couple of willow shoots. When the mole pushes against the peg and loosens it, the cord is released and the hazel rod springing up, tightens the nooses round the mole's body
تاريخ أرشيفي
MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'The trapping of moles has been common for many centuries. Gervase Markham in the early seventeenth century treats the subject at length. // This is a simple type of trap which aims at catching the mole in his run between two loops of string. A section is dug cleanly out of the roof of the main tunnel to the mole’s permanent home. The trap consists of a board with a small hole in the middle and a narrow hoop at either end. Two nooses of string are pressed round inside the hoops and their ends drawn through the board and fastened to a cord of which one end is tied to the top of a hazel switch. The switch is bent down to the ground by means of a short cord which is held in the hole in the board by a small wooden peg which projects downwards from the board into the tunnel between the two nooses. This peg is known as the MUMBLE PIN. The board is then firmly pegged down to the ground with a couple of forked willow-shoots. When the mole pushes against the peg and loosens it, the cord is released and the hazel rod springing up, tightens the nooses round the mole’s body. In the less primitive type of trap, the nooses are made of wire and the peg is not forked.', MERL list / description [Massingham Collection, October 1989] – 'ACC.
