This portable steam engine, serial no. 15635, was manufactured by Clayton and Shuttleworth of Lincoln in the 1870s and was delivered to the company of Ball and Horton, ‘engineers & iron founders & proprietors of steam ploughing & threshing machines’ (Kelly’s Directory, 1892), of Stratford-upon-Avon on 30 January 1877. The engine, which was horse-drawn, has a single cylinder and a rating of 7NHP (nominal horse power). It is likely that it was sold to a farmer in the early twentieth century. They made their first portable steam engine in 1845 and their first threshing machine four years later. By the end of the nineteenth century, production had risen to over 30,000 steam engines and 20,000 threshing machines at the Stamp End Works in Lincoln. In the 1870s and 1880s, the export trade became increasingly important and Clayton & Shuttleworth were awarded many medals for their products at shows and exhibitions around the world.<P>51/1284</SPAN></SPAN></P></DIV>
تاريخ أرشيفي
The horse drawn engine has a single cylinder and has a rating of 7 nominal horse power of 7NHP. This does not equate to the strength of 7 horses but is a classification system calculated by reference to the size of the cylinder bore and the speed of the piston. The engine was retubed in Banbury in 1920. Its last owner was H. C. Stilgoe, and was purchased for £3 per ton. The museum was keen to acquire it as around 85% of these engines were sent abroad.
