This collection contains the papers of the Smith family, Viscounts Hambleden: many family and business papers are included but the greater part consists of the papers of William Henry Smith (1825-1891). His papers may be broadly divided into three sections: Family papers, primarily correspondence (HAM A-Z), including the long series of letters to his wife; Business, estate and philanthropic papers (HAM AA-WW); and Political papers (HAM PS) The papers of William Frederick Danvers Smith, Second Viscount Hambleden, are also included (HAM FS). Additional papers are listed under reference HAM HA.
