This bell is presumed to be one from a set of horse latten bells which has been split up and used as sheep bells. It has a leather collar for hanging round the neck of a sheep. Bells were used to help shepherds locate their sheep.

MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'This bell was presumably one of a set of horse latten bells which were split up and used as sheep bells. // A sheep collar of leather has been attached rather crudely to the original fastening. // The bell is 4.3 inches high and 4 inches across the mouth.
