The forming chisel is used to make initial rought cuts to a piece of wood with the aid of a mallet. The blade on this chisel is sharply bevelled to a straight edge and the wooden handle has been flattened by frequent hammering. It was used at R. Middleton & Sons' wheelwrights workshop in Eddington, Hungerford.

MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'This forming chisel was used at the Middletons wheelwright shop at Eddington, (Berks). // It has a tubular shaft into which the handle is fitted. The shaft narrows before flattening out into the blade. The blade is sharply bevelled to a straight edge. The handle has been flattened by frequent hammering. // The blade and shaft together are 9.45 inches long. The blade is 1 inch wide and the handle is 3.25 inches long, 1 inch wide at the joint with the shaft and 1.45 inches at its extreme end. The maker’s name has been stamped on the back of the blade but is illegible. // Se 51/354.'
