This is an S-shaped wrought iron candle holder. The holder would be suspended by top of the S and the candle fits into the socket at the bottom of the S. It dates from the eighteenth century and came from Sussex.

MERL 'Catalogue index' card – 'This candle holder is made of wrought iron. It is S shaped so that the bottom of the S holds the candle and top is pointed for hanging on a beam. // It comes from Sussex and is 16 inches long.'Victoria & Albert Museum No. M382, 1917.
Eighteenth century
