This cultivator was used as a fence in a hedge. Cultivators stirred the soil deeply without turning it, and brought the weeds to the surface. Little is known about the origins of this object. It has three long wooden beams and three shorter cross beams, which pass through longer beams – one at each end of the cultivator. Traces of red paint on wood. It had been used as a fence in a hedge and is now in poor condition.

MERL miscellaneous note - 'Cultivators were developed in the early nineteenth century, mainly to deal with new land which the drag harrow could not touch. They stirred the soil deeply without turning it, and brought the weeds to the surface.'
