1:1 Built Structures: the radical pedagogy of designing-by-making for undergraduate architectural education

The project aims to review the learning objectives and outcomes of incorporating designing-by-making techniques for undergraduate architecture students. Based on the Built Structure projects that are incorporated into the curriculum of the School of Architecture for part two students, this study investigates the pedagogical value of making in enhancing the skills of the designer in three areas: experimental form-finding, collaboration and construction techniques.

2 x internships: Digital Discovery – Putting Cyclamen on the web

The University of Reading Herbarium (RNG) holds the collections of the Cyclamen Society expeditions dating back to 1987. Last year students started cataloguing these. This year we hope to move the collections into a digital format through databasing and imaging. You will join the herbarium, part of an international network of preserved plant collections to help image curation and science outreach. You will be encouraged to publicise work using the Herbarium Social media account.

3 x internships: Cardiovascular & Metabolic Research

Supervisor: Prof Jon Gibbins

In these projects we will explore the the fundament processes that determine the development of cardiovascular diseases, and the metabolic conditions from which these frequently develop. Opportunities will be available within ICMR laboratories that range from cell and molecular biology and physiology, though to human studies of disease development.

3D modeling of medieval sites and tombstones

Supervisor: Dr Saša Čaval

This placement will investigate the regional phenomenon of stećci, the medieval tombstones, in Bosnia and Herzegovina (12th – 16th C) through the digital modeling of 3D images of the monuments and sites.
